Step-by-step process

  1. Determine Applicable Marriage Act

    • Hindu Marriage Act 1955: Applies if both parties are Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, or Sikh, and religious marriage ceremonies have already been solemnized. • Special Marriage Act 1954: Applies to civil marriages, inter-faith or inter-caste marriages, or court marriages solemnized directly before the Marriage Officer (requires a mandatory 30-day public notice period).

  2. Book Online Slot on State Revenue / e-District Portal

Visit your state portal (e.g. edistrict.delhigovt.nic.in, igrsup.gov.in, igrmaharashtra.gov.in, etc.). Fill Form A with bride and groom details, date and venue of marriage, upload marriage photographs, wedding invitation card, and book an appointment slot at the Sub-Registrar office.

  3. Prepare the Mandatory Affidavits

Prepare individual Affidavits of Marital Status on Non-Judicial Stamp Paper (attested by Notary). The affidavits declare date of birth, Indian citizenship, marital status at time of marriage (unmarried/divorcee/widower), and confirmation that the parties are not within prohibited degrees of relationship.

  4. In-Person Appearance Before Sub-Registrar with 3 Witnesses

On the appointment date, both husband and wife must physically appear before the Sub-Registrar along with 3 witnesses who attended the wedding (e.g. parents, relatives, or friends). Witnesses must carry original Aadhaar cards and photographs.

  5. Verification, Biometrics, and Marriage Certificate Issuance

The Registrar verifies original age and wedding proofs, captures live digital photographs and biometric thumb impressions of both spouses and witnesses. The Marriage Certificate is signed, sealed, and issued on the same day or downloadable online.
