Official statutory procedure under Aadhaar Regulation 16A for updating Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA). Avoid deactivation, bank freeze, and subsidy cancellation.

Under Regulation 16A of the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Regulations, 2016, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) mandates that all Aadhaar cardholders who enrolled 10 or more years ago and have not updated their supporting documents must re-validate their Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA). Failure to update can result in temporary Aadhaar suspension, blocking DBT subsidies, PM-Kisan installments, bank accounts, and passport verifications.

Step-by-step process

  1. Access myAadhaar Portal & Authenticate with OTP

Visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and click on 'Login with Aadhaar and OTP'. Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and captcha. Enter the 6-digit OTP received on your linked mobile number to access your citizen dashboard.

  2. Select 'Document Update' Service

On your dashboard, locate the service card labeled 'Document Update (Proof of Identity and Proof of Address)'. Read the compliance advisories explaining why periodic re-verification strengthens your identity safety against identity fraud.

  3. Verify Existing Demographic Details

Review your displayed Name, Gender, Date of Birth, and Address. If your details match your physical documents, check the verification confirmation box ('I verify that the above details are correct') and proceed. Note: If demographic details have changed, you must perform Demographic Update first.

  4. Upload Supporting POI & POA Documents

Select your identity proof from the approved dropdown list (e.g. Voter ID, PAN Card, Ration Card, Passport) and upload a clear PDF/JPEG/PNG copy (under 2 MB). Next, select and upload your valid Proof of Address (e.g. Electricity Bill under 3 months, Domicile Certificate, Bank Passbook, Rent Agreement).

  5. Submit and Download Service Request Number (SRN) Slip

Review the uploaded documents and click 'Submit'. An official Acknowledgement Receipt with a 14-digit Service Request Number (SRN) will be generated. You can track your update status anytime on myAadhaar using this SRN.

Stamp paper rules

The UIDAI online document update process does not require stamp paper or notary attestation if standard government-issued photo identity cards (Voter ID, Passport, PAN, Electricity Bill) are uploaded. However, if using the Standard UIDAI Certificate Format for Head of Family (HOF) or gazetted officer certification, it must bear an authorized official seal and signature.
